Welcome to Fuerteventura

If you have never been to Fuerteventura in the canary Islands or if you are intending to visit I hope you find my site useful and of interest.

The second largest of the canary islands after Tenerife it is the closest to the coast of Morocco in Africa at 97km/ 60 miles, with Lanzarote being the next closest. The name Fuerteventura is said to come from the word Fuerte (meaning strong) and ventura(viento meaning wind)and the winds are strong on Fuerteventura for most of the time.
The strong warm trade winds blow across from the Sahara Desert making it the perfect location for the enjoyment of sports in windsurfing surfing and kite boarding. The world champianships are held here for these events from the end of July each year at Sotavento beach at near by Costa Calma. Flagbeach by the Corralejo sandunes is a Favourite with the wind and kite surfers while the surfboarders favour the wilder waters on the west side around El Cotillo.

Around El Cotillo you can find many secluded lagoons where you can relax and enjoy the sun but beware the sun is very strong all year round with temperatures ranging from 20c - 30c plenty of high factor sunscreen is advisable as the wind makes it seem cooler than it realy is and you can burn easily. With sunshine all year round and very little rain the landscape is very arrid but it is still very beautiful.
With one hundred and fifty beaches to explore there is space and tranquility for all, with it's crystal clear turquoise sea and with white, golden and black volcanic sand beaches you will find plenty to choose from.

In the south of the island you will find the sand dunes of Jandia and some of the best beaches on the island also you will find the Villa de Winter at the lonely Cofete.
There are many places of interest to visit with historical buildings such as the House of the Colonels at La Oliva, The monument to Miguel de Unamuno at Tindaya and the chuch of Iglesia Nuestra Senora de la Regla at Pajara, the ship wreck of the SS American Star at playa de Garcy and the fairly new attraction to Fuerteventura the Oasis Park zoo at La Lajita.
