My island dream
My first trip to Fuerteventura was in 2002 it was a lovely time for me as I had never flown before and it was my birthday and what a birthday, As we flew over the mountains and I had my first view of the island I was in awe of the surroundings as it seemed so stark, but as we decended and could see the wonderful beaches, you had to marvel at its beauty, I stayed at Caleta de Fuste but soon realised that if I wanted to explore the island I had to do so by hireing a car, I did so and travelled all over the island as there are so many beaches you can only get to by car or jeep.
March 2004
I went again to Fuerteventura and was surprised just how much it had changed ! so much building work was going on and hotels going up every where, it seemed a shame to spoil the beauty but more and more people are realizing this and want to travel there,I travelled round again and found even more things to see.
January 2005
I went again in again for my birthday and couldn't wait to get back there, found more places to explore and hired a jeep and travelled over and around the mountains this time, and also found all the tracks by the coastal route that you couldn't do by car, So in one day I travelled all round the edge of the coast and from one end to the other, was tired at the end of the day but it was well worth it as I didn't want to miss a bit of it. To any one going there don't just stay at your resort [go explore you will miss so much if you dont] I cant wait to go back as there is the lighthouse to see right at the tip near Morro Jable and I want to find the track to Cofete from there so I will be on my travels again soon may even see you there.
July 2005
Well I have been back as you can see, I found Cofete and the Lighthouse and the Wreck of the SS. American Star, visited Tindaya and the monument on the side of the mountain, it was very hot but was a good trip, found alot more beaches and almost got stuck a few times in the mountains, and in the dunes of Jandia while trying to get to Cofete the hard way, had to give up and find a safer route back to the main road and had to go to cofete the proper way from morro jable but it was worth it, got to see a lot more than most people ever will and the Jandia dunes are so vast and wild it is truly wonderful and the views back along the coast are great, as is the view of cofete so misty and mysterious and so untouched.
January 2007
Back again 17 months later and for my birthday yet again, some changes have taken place lots of new hotels going up around the island, and some that where being built last visit around corralejo have stayed the same no more progress than before
I do not know why but it seems as if the builders have run out of money.
I decided to stay at the north end of the island at Correlejo as it was easy to get to the main roads and the tracks for our adventures and not hindered by the town. I could not stay on the resort as there is to much to see, and if I want to sunbath it is much nicer to do so on any of the beaches around the island than by a pool even though the pool looked very nice.
Well I went back to the shipwreck to see how she was doing very sad to see her breaking up like she is but I was pleased she was still there for me to update my pictures.
I went back to Cofete to take the pictures of villa winter that I forgot to take last time there, it was a beautiful day and the sun shone so it didn't appear so misty as it had before and the beach was glorious.
We also returned to see the House of the colonels at La Oliva it has now been completed and is now open to the public.
You can walk around the building and see the magnificent rooms and architecture.
We also took some hair raising risks yet again up in the mountains and nearly didn’t make it down with the jeep on one trip, I had to navigate very slowly by walking in front of the jeep while Marv tried to keep it on the track and not in the craters that seemed to appear the further down the track, and with a shear drop at the side of the track we didn’t have any choice but to go forward as there was no way of turning round or reversing back down the track it was forward or abandon the jeep and a hefty bill, but after a couple of hours we made it back down and was very relieved.
Marv climbed up one volcano near Corralejo to take some pictures of the crater for me and found it was not so easy getting back down the way he had gone up. I was at the bottom with the jeep and watched him start to come down but didn’t see him go back up to find another route down so I started to panic as I thought he had fallen and thought I would go look for him not thinking that I might get into trouble my self, so breaking the golden rule of not leaving the jeep and Marv leaving his phone behind I stupidly started to climb up shouting for him, after climbing for a while I heard Marv shouting for me to come down he was by the jeep after finding a different way down I had to be very careful on my decent as I realised now why Marv had not come back down that side.
On the 8th January my birthday we went on a trip to the Isle of Lobos we didn’t go on one of the big boats taking loads of other visitors over we chose to go on a inflatable speed boat it was great fun but a bit scary, Peter the boat owner told me to stand up and hold onto the bar next to him instead of sitting on the side holding onto a rope, while bouncing over the waves I felt much safer than Marv hanging on for dear life.
When we had been dropped off we walked for about 45 minuets to mount Lobos we climbed up the volcano to see some fantastic views of the tiny island and the view over to Lanzarote after we had climbed down we stopped at the lagoon and beach for a swim very refreshing on a warm day and so nice as the water is quite calm and so clear we had a fantastic day there.
