El Cotillo

El Cotillo is a fishing village on the north west side of the island it is a nice quiet place with white painted buildings, although it is not so much a holiday resort but it attracts many people to visit the fish restaurants and beaches.
Surfing  windsurfing, diving,  sailing and sport sea fishing all take place off the spectacular beach to the left as you arrive in El Cotillo not far from the new harbour.

(Onit surf shop has now clossed.)
If you are an experianced surfer you will proberly be heading to a spot called bubbles by no means as innocent as it sounds it is is where the waves break over reefs and rocks and many a casualtiy can be seen limping around El Cotillo or Corralejo you will need to have your own  transport to get here though.

Also at this point is the Castillo el Toston which was built in the 1700s it was built to defend against the pirates of the time, it was built from stone quarried not far from El Cotillo, it has a stone staircase and a drawbridge and steps down to the arsenal  to the left as you go in and stairs to the right take you up to las losas an area of level ground, three iron cannons defended the coast. It is beleived that a garrison of twelve men would be accomidated there, it is one of the sights  to see and the view from the top is outstanding and a must if visiting El Cotillo, it was declared a historic monument in 1949 and is an important part of the history of Fuerteventura.

Nearby is the new Toston Lighthouse built along side of the old one, and all around are small coves of very white sand and some of the most secluded beaches on all the island, you can find many a cove that is free from anyone else so you can have your own small piece of paradise.
