Costa Calma
One of the most beautiful beaches is that of Playa de Sotavento at the near by peaceful Costa Calma with it's endless white and golden sands, People flock here for the water sports of wind surfing as the waters are quiet safe and free from rocks.
There are several ways to get to the beach you can come off the fv2 at the sign for'' Hotel los Gorriones '' and follow the road down, plenty of parking space and walk over the varst sand to the sea, or as I do come off on one of the tracks and drive or walk down to the dunes which ever way it is worth seeing.
The sea is so blue and crystal clear, if you want to walk along the beach to the south you can reach Morro jable but it is a bit of a hike it's about 20ks so unless you are really fit it's best to drive and stop off at the points along the way, You will find several secluded beaches along the way from Costa Calma to Morro Jable but wind makes the water dangerous in places so beware, if you do drive you will need a 4x4 as the only way to reach these beaches are by dirt tracks or by hiking.
The wind and kiteboard championships are held at Sotavento beach from July 21st-5th August 2006 this year where you will see all the stunts and airobatics these masters of the waves can perform.
There are two Rene Egli Pro surf centers one is by the Hotel los Gorriones and a smaller one down by the dunes about two miles apart, kite surfing from center 1 and both wind and kite from center 2 where you can book lessons or hire equipment, if you book there is a bus that runs between the two centers to make things easier for more infomation on prices and conditions visit www.rene-egli.com
There is a sand bank with calma waters for the beginners and is a favourite with the wind surfers and plenty of refreshments are available to at the restaurants and bars around the centers, also fresh water showers and tiolets are available at both centers.
