Corralejo

Coralejo is a wonderful place with beautiful beaches and glorious sand dunes, it is a place shrouded in mystery.
Corralejo (derived from the word corral which was a name for a stone enclosure for livestock) was once an old fishing village, all though fishing still takes place in the neighbourhood it is now more a tourist resort, and has now grown from a village to be a town, but the old part by the harbour can still be seen, and this is where you will find many a bar and resturant, you can watch the boats come into the harbour and the fish of the day being prepaired on the rocks in front of you, With the Isolate de Lobos as a back drop it makes for a wonderful horizon when lit by a full moon.

The dunes of Corralejo are in a protected site, it was once part of the nature reserve with Lobos but it is now protected alone, it is a natural nature reserve with the mountains and endless sea and sand.
The red mountain(montana colarado)is where the dunes del Corralejo begin, it is a vast area of mountainous moving sand set on a volcanic base material with the sand blown in on the trade winds from the Sahara desert in Africa.
To the west of the dunes is the malpais de la caldera encantada or(the bayuyo)an amazing formation of volcanic rocks which are believed to have been formed more than 8000 years ago.
Lobos is now a protected nature reserve on its own.
With the northerly trade winds it is an ideal place for the enjoyment of water sports such as surfing, wind surfing and kitebording.
