Cofete
Cofete is on the south west side of the island and is a very lonely place but it is very beautiful with is long stretch of golden beach the Playa de Barlovento is 14km long.A place for lovers of tranquility and open spaces it is over looked by the highest mountain on the island the Pico de Zarza at 807m.
It is much cooler on this side of the island due to the windward shores and the high winds and surges in the current and the mountains cloaking it in mystery.
You can see Cofete from the sand dunes of Jandia but it is almost impossible to get to it this way, you have to go to Morro Jable and by the harbour look for the road sign posted on the right it is only a make shift sign so it is easily missed, follow the road untill it becomes a dirt track that leads you towards the Light house further down you will find a sign post take the right fork that leads you up over the mountain it's a 20km drive from the harbour, as you come over the top of the mountain the view is amazing, it is worth the trouble to get to it just to see this view, as you snake down the winding track the view of the beach gets better and better.
When you reach the bottom there are some small shacks, the one big house down here that is set back up in the mountain is the villa de winter once owned by the german Gustav Winter.

The restaraunt was built at the same time as the villa and the same type of windows where used for both buildings, thought to have been built for the German soldiers as a place of relaxation and entertainment. It is the only restaurant at cofete,so if you wish to have a meal and a drink this is the only place unless you take your own as we did.
There is a monument near the bar and restaurant of a green man and his dog.
And the cemetery on the beach is believed to be for all the workers that died building the villa and the restaurant.
The sand dunes of the Jandia peninsula can be seen from the north end of the beach.
