Betancuria is set in the Betancuria Massif(mountains) it was the second stage of volcanic eruptions that formed the central part of the island, the main road that runs up the side, round and through the mountains leads you to the top where you can see spectacular views of the mountains and valleys, there are stop off points along the way so you can view the views in safety as it is not wise to stop on the winding narrow roads. Carry on to Pajara and this is one of the best kept and prettiest villages you will see on the island they are very proud of their village and it shows, here you will find the church but it is tucked away in trees in the center and you may miss it if you are not careful , but it is a beautiful church with two naves and two alters one for the white maddona and one for the black maddona and it is very beautifully decorated i can not show you pictures as they ask you not to take them out of respect for the maddona, but it is well worth seeing.
As you travel on through the village of Betancuria you will see the church and other things listed on previous page as you travel on you will reach Vega De Rio Palmas where there is a very pretty church built in 1666, as the name suggests it is a village with very many palm trees, along this route you will be able to view the Marsh of La Pena in the nature reserve of Betancuria nature park it is set in the valley there is a road that leads down to the oasis just before you reach the village.
